Our history
The Inaugural meeting of Witney Buttercross Sugarcraft Guild was held on
12th February 1987 in the back room of the Creative Cake Craft shop in West
End, Witney. Twenty-five people attended and a committee was formed with
Margaret Latham as Chairman.
The first meeting was set for 21st March 1987. Out of sixty people attending
- 42 became members. Monthly meetings were agreed and demonstrators were
booked to come and show us their skills in sugarcraft.
Funds were raised and still are, by means of a Raffle and Sales Table at
each monthly meeting.
Over the years that followed we entered several competitions with other
Sugarcraft Guilds gaining Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
We occasionally run a coach to these competitions so that members can see
other Guilds who were competing and to buy equipment from the sugarcraft
traders who also attend the venues.

In 1998 we decided to leave The British Sugarcraft Guild and become an
independent club with our motto "Knowledge thru' friendship"
In 1999 we entered our first competition as an Independent at
Stratford-upon-Avon, we won Gold, Best in Show, £50 plus some marzipan and
icing!
In twenty-one years of Sugarcrafting we have held cake stalls outside Giles
Toy Shop in Carterton and the Post Office in Witney. The money raised has
been split between our club funds and over 20 local charities. To date
almost two thousand pounds has been donated to charities in and around the
Witney area.
We also visit exhibitions at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, and
Squires Kitchen either by coach or shared cars. |
